Why this picture was controversial, and other uses of nail polish

A few years ago, a female scientist at University of Hawaii Manoa appropriated the twitter hashtag #ManicureMonday--which otherwise featured women showing off their manicures--to show off her lack of manicure, and that she is handling a test tube (pictured).

The tweet was contraversial. Some female scientests were upset because, well, they DO like wearing nail polish, even when they're handling test tubes.
