Girl Coders on a Mission to Create Virtual Safe Spaces

Give a bunch of girl hackers a computer, 24 hours and the support of some senior programmers and they will design a virtual, new world -- literally.

On Valentine's Day, seven young coders gathered in New York to take part in an international event and put their skills to the service of a bigger cause: creating a cyber safe space for women around the world.

Under the supervision of more experienced coders, the young programmers were asked to develop an innovative web site or application that would provide a community resource, help women report injustice, or be educated about their rights.

The two-day competition was part of a global campaign launched by organizer Global Fund for Women and also took place in Oakland, Taiwan and India. The winning project will be announced in April and will become a pilot for the organization’s grantees.
