University Researches Ways to Draw Women Toward Science Majors

By Her Tech NYC

The University of Wisconsin’s 2013 Data Digest states that in 2013 only 20.5 percent of engineering students were women. This is a problem many schools across the country are facing. UW, however, is trying to help girls realize from an early age that they can study science.

In order to get more young women to consider careers in STEM fields, early introduction to topics is key. Students need to ensure their high school curriculum prepares them for college-level science courses. The University’s Society for Women Engineers (SWE) works with undergraduate women and helps them achieve their professional goals, but to get more girls interested, the organization does outreach. The University’s chapter of SWE s reaching out to girls in grades 5-7 and invites Girl Scouts to spend the day on campus learning engineering. Read more about SWE here.
